Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, is going to be awarded with the honorary title of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army.
Mohanlal will be the first actor in the country to get such a prestigious title from the army. The only other celebrity to get this title is former cricket captain Kapil Dev.
It is learnt that the chief of army recommended Mohanlal's name to the Defence Ministry. An official MoD communique is expected in a month.
It is sure that the two army roles that he donned -- in Keerthichakra and Kurukshetra -- which led to this . Keerthichakra depicted the army's anti-militancy operations in J&K,while Kurukshetra was about the Kargil war.
The Territorial Army is a voluntary part-time civilian force that plays a key role in the defence of the country. It provides an opportunity to civilians to receive military training and also provides the country with a reserve force that can assist the regular army during operations, whenever required. However, it remains a honorary post.
I am a great fan of Mohanlal. But it's a bit hard to understand what's going on.Why is the army giving away such prestigious titles to celebrities like Mohanlal and Kapil Dev?
Will they be fighting with the army during a war?
Even if the Colonel title is that of a voluntary part-time civilian force, any post of a force that plays a key role in the defence of the country should not be given away like this.
May be it's my ignorance, but my humble view is that an Indian Army post, and that of a Colonel title, should not be distributed to film stars and all just because of acting in two patriotic films.
Indian Army is a very sacred institution.
